Dental ImplantsAn Overview

Dental implants are an innovative, long-lasting solution that are used to address the restorative needs of patients missing one or more teeth. They offer patients the most life-like option for restoring their smile, replacing the lost tooth crown and tooth root and offering several key benefits for long-term dental health.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants consist of three parts: a titanium post, abutment, and a dental prosthesis. The dental prosthesis or final restoration is chosen depending on the number of missing teeth, the condition of your oral health, and the location of the missing teeth. Dental implants may be used to secure dental crowns, dentures & partials, or dental bridges.

Dental implants remain one of the highest rated tooth replacement solutions amongst patients today and offer natural looking, long lasting results for patients seeking to restore their smile. As one of the leading tooth replacement solutions, dental implants offer patients a variety of benefits.

Benefits of Dental Implants:

  • Dental implants help maintain proper chewing function.
  • Dental implants stimulate bone growth in the jaw.
  • Dental implants can help prevent facial sagging as a result of missing teeth.
  • Dental implants provide a more secure foundation for a dental crown, bridge, or denture.

Dental Implants What to Expect

Receiving dental implants is a multi-step process. Dr. Deckard uses a CBCT technology to construct and plan out the dental implant procedure. With advanced technology, Dr. Deckard can asses bone density and quality, plan the entire procedure, and take accurate molds and impressions.  Using advanced methods and technology enables Dr. Deckard to take a more personalized approach to dental care.

To prepare for the dental implant procedure, the implant site is numbed to ensure patients are comfortable throughout their visit. The titanium post is surgically implanted into the jawbone. During a process called osseointegration, the titanium post fuses with the jawbone to create a stable foundation used to support the final dental prosthesis. Typically, osseointegration takes about 3 to 6 months to complete.

After the healing process, the abutment is attached to the titanium post. The abutment is the connector between the post and the final prosthesis. Once the abutment is placed and tissues have healed, the final prosthesis is attached to the abutment. Depending on your needs, the final prosthesis may be a dental crown, denture, or dental bridge.

  • Implant secured dental crowns replace one or more missing teeth
  • Implant secured dentures replace the top, bottom, or both arches of missing teeth
  • Implant secured dental bridges replace several consecutive missing teeth.

In the end, patients will leave feeling more confident and secure with their new smile. To ensure your implant lasts, be sure to practice healthy oral hygiene habits and visit our dental office for routine dental care.

Dental Implants FAQs

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Most patients either are or can be candidates for dental implants. Dr. Deckard will evaluate the condition of your oral health to look for the key elements of the necessary foundation for placing implants. These include healthy gum tissue and enough stable bone structure in the jaw to support the posts.

Dr. Deckard offers bone grafting to improve the oral health of a patient who otherwise may have to consider alternative tooth replacement options.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are made to last a lifetime, but rely on the patient practicing good oral hygiene and visiting our office for routine dental care. This provides the opportunity for our team to monitor the health and stability of the implant or implant supported appliance.
