Addressing crooked and misaligned teeth can not only improve the appearance of your smile, but it can also improve your oral health. Most adult patients with crooked teeth are discouraged by the appearance and feel of traditional metal braces. However, Invisalign can be used as an alternative to traditional metal braces. Invisalign is a series of clear aligners that gradually reposition the teeth over the course of your treatment. Invisalign aligners can be removed to allow patients to perform their daily oral hygiene routine and eat, drink, and speak without restriction.
Invisalign is ideal for teen and adult patients with mild to moderate orthodontic concerns. When applicable, most patients opt for Invisalign because it offers a more discreet, comfortable, and easy solution for straightening crooked teeth.
It is important to note that not all orthodontic concerns are equal. Some patients with advanced orthodontic concerns may require the specialized care of an orthodontist. Dr. Deckard will work with patients to organize specialized care for advanced orthodontic cases. In most cases, Invisalign can be effectively used to address:
Gaps between teeth
To achieve a straighter smile

Invisalign What to Expect
Invisalign aligners are created with each patient’s specific needs in mind. Using 3-D technology and digital imaging, Dr. Deckard will quickly capture images of your teeth. Using these 3-D images, he will create accurate measurements and molds of the teeth to ensure a precise fit. Invisalign aligners are created using SmartTrack material which is specially designed with a patients’ comfort and needs in mind.
Patients have the added benefit of addressing their orthodontic concerns more discreetly than ever before. Invisalign’s clear, removable aligners don’t irritate the gum tissue and allow patients to straighten their teeth without discomfort.
Ideally, patients should wear their aligners for at least 22 hours per day to achieve optimal results. Patients will need to switch their aligners about every one to two weeks during the duration of their treatment. The length of treatment and the number of aligners provided will depend on the specifics of each patients’ case. On average, patients usually wear their aligner between 12-18 months; however, that may vary from patient to patient. Dr. Deckard will explain all aspects of treatment during a visit to our Washington, DC dentist office.
Caring for you aligners is easy. You should rinse and brush them every night. Using your tooth brush, gently brush your aligner to keep it fresh and clean. To help reduce the amount of food getting stuck in them, we recommend you brush your teeth after you eat and before putting your aligners back in.

Invisalign clear aligners are made of safe materials that do not harm or stain teeth. They are clear and breathable. Since they can be removed at any time, you can remove them if you notice odd discomfort or sharp pain. If they cause pain, contact your dentist right away.
This will depend on the severity of your malocclusion. If you have minor crooked teeth issues, such as having just one or two misaligned teeth, you may not have to wear the aligners for longer than a year. Although, you may need to wear the aligners for up to 3 years if you have moderate to major alignment issues.
You aren’t really restricted to a specific diet during Invisalign treatment since you can take the aligners off before you eat anything. Just be sure to brush your teeth if you eat very sticky foods before putting the aligners back on. We always recommend at least rinsing your mouth before putting your Invisalign aligners on.
