Do I Have Sleep Apnea?

One of the usual signs of sleep apnea is loud snoring when you’re sleeping. But how do you know if it’s sleep apnea or just a snoring issue? Dr. Justin Deckard of DC Precision Dentistry discusses the symptoms and signs of sleep apnea in Washington DC.

Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Loud snoring is the most typical symptom that warns you of sleep apnea. However, it is more common that we develop a snoring habit as we age or gain weight. Snoring may not always be caused by sleep apnea. But it’s important to evaluate other symptoms you may be experiencing to really tell. Never hesitate to get it checked out.

It may be more likely to be sleep apnea if you have these other symptoms. First, if you’re tired throughout the day, even when you think you’ve gotten a full night of sleep, that’s an indicator. You may actually find yourself waking up in the middle of the night gasping for air or wake yourself up with the loudness of your own snoring.

Throughout the day, you may find yourself moody, irritable, or depressed. It can be hard for you to concentrate on things like work or school. High blood pressure and recurring headaches upon waking are other common indicators of sleep apnea. If you find yourself experiencing one or more of these symptoms, it’s time to talk to someone about sleep apnea in Washington DC.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

There’s a reason why all of these signs point to sleep apnea. Sleep apnea occurs when the soft tissue in the back of your mouth collapses while you sleep. This obstructs your airway and causes you to stop breathing throughout the night. Your brain and the rest of your body may not be getting the oxygen you need. This happens multiple times during the night, interrupting your sleep when you may not even realize it.

This is why sleep apnea is such a big deal. You shouldn’t wait, especially if you’re experiencing multiple symptoms. Having a restricted airway while you’re sleeping every night can lead to serious health problems. Sleep apnea causes problems with your blood pressure and can make you more likely to suffer from heart attacks, stroke, or even death.

Treatment for Sleep Apnea

If you think you’re suffering from sleep apnea, Dr. Deckard is ready to help. He may recommend sleep testing or other diagnostics to determine the severity of your sleep apnea case. Your current health is also figured in, and Dr. Deckard may ask you to make some lifestyle changes to help with your sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is often treated with a CPAP machine or oral appliance therapy. Ideally, an oral appliance will be used to reposition your jaw when you’re sleeping. This prevents the soft tissue from collapsing and blocking your airway.
