What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant isn’t just a replacement tooth. It’s a small titanium post that we surgically place into the jawbone. Over time, the bone grows around that post, locking it in place just like a natural tooth root.
Once that’s healed, we attach a custom-made crown on top. The result is often a replacement tooth that looks natural, feels stable, and functions just like the real thing. Think of it as giving your jaw a new foundation to build on.
The Consultation: Where Everything Starts
Before any procedure happens, we need to make sure an implant is the right choice for you.
Dr. Deckard will examine your mouth, take X-rays or a CT scan, and check the health of your jawbone. You need enough bone density to support the implant. If there’s not enough, don’t worry; we can talk about bone grafting options.
We’ll also go over your medical history and talk about what you hope to achieve. This is your chance to ask questions. We want you to feel completely comfortable before we move forward.
Step 1: Placing the Implant
On the day of surgery, we start by numbing the area with a local anesthetic. Most patients tell us they feel pressure but no pain during the procedure.
Dr. Deckard makes a small incision in the gum to expose the bone. Then he carefully drills a tiny hole and places the titanium post right into the jawbone. The gum gets stitched back into place over the implant, and the healing begins.
The whole process usually takes about an hour for a single implant.
Step 2: The Healing Period
The implant needs time to fuse with your jawbone. This process is called osseointegration, and it takes about three to six months. During this time, the bone grows right around the titanium post, locking it firmly in place.
You’ll likely wear a temporary restoration to protect the area and keep things looking normal. We’ll check in with you regularly to make sure healing is going smoothly.
Step 3: Adding the Abutment
Once the implant has fused completely with the bone, we move to the next step.
Dr. Deckard makes a small opening in the gum to expose the top of the implant. Then he attaches a small connector piece called an abutment. This piece sticks out above the gum line and holds your new tooth in place. This is a minor procedure that usually requires only local anesthesia.
Step 4: Placing the Crown
We take impressions of your mouth so we can custom-make your permanent crown to match your natural teeth perfectly. Once it’s ready, Dr. Deckard attaches the crown to the abutment. And just like that, your new tooth is in place.
What Does Recovery Look Like?
After each step, there will be some mild soreness and swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers usually take care of it just fine. Most patients are back to normal activities within a day or two.
