You’ve probably heard the term “dental crown” before. Maybe your dentist mentioned one years ago. Maybe a friend just got one. But if you’re not entirely sure what a crown is or why someone would need one, you’re not alone.

At DC Precision Dentistry, we place crowns regularly. And we’ve found that most patients have questions. So let’s break it down in plain English.

What Is a Dental Crown: When You Need One in Washington, DC

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth. It fits over the entire visible portion of the tooth, from the gum line up. Think of it like a protective helmet for your tooth.

Crowns come in a few different materials. Porcelain and ceramic are popular because they look natural. Metal crowns are strong and long-lasting. And some crowns combine materials for the best of both worlds.

Once a crown is in place, it looks and functions just like a natural tooth. You can chew with it, brush it, and floss around it. Most people can’t even tell it’s there.

When Do You Actually Need a Crown?

Not every damaged tooth needs a crown. Here are the situations where a crown makes the most sense.

Why Some Crowns Fail (And How We Prevent That)

A crown is only as good as the bite it sits in. If a crown is placed on a tooth that hits too hard, it can crack. If the bite is uneven, the crown can loosen or break. We’ve seen patients who’ve had the same crown replaced three or four times because nobody addressed the underlying bite problem.

This is where Dr. Deckard’s training at the Dawson Academy makes a real difference. Before placing a crown, he evaluates how the whole bite works. He checks which teeth touch first. He looks at jaw position and muscle function.

When we design a crown with the bite in mind, it lasts longer. It feels more comfortable. It also protects the rest of your teeth.

What to Expect During the Process at DC Precision Dentistry

Getting a crown usually takes two visits.

  1. At the first visit, we prepare the tooth by reshaping it so the crown will fit properly. We take impressions and place a temporary crown to protect the tooth.
  2. At the second visit, we remove the temporary crown and cement the permanent one in place. We check the fit and adjust the bite if needed.

The whole process is comfortable, and most patients are back to normal activities right away.

Caring for Your Crown

Crowns are durable, but they’re not indestructible. Good oral hygiene matters. Brush and floss around the crown just like you would a natural tooth. Avoid chewing on ice or hard objects. And keep up with regular dental visits so we can monitor the crown and your overall oral health.

With proper care, a well-made crown can last 10 to 15 years or longer.
